Ask almost any bike shop what's flying out the door these days and the answer is the same: gravel bikes, and the interest just keeps growing. So what's behind the boom, and why are so many road riders quietly switching sides? Let's talk gravel.

The quick version

Gravel cycling has exploded because it brings the fun back to riding. As road bikes got lighter, stiffer, and more aero, they also got less practical for anything but perfect tarmac. Gravel bikes fill the gap, happy on the road, comfortable on dirt, and built around adventure rather than average speed. Why gravel is booming

Modern road bikes are incredible machines, but that focus comes at a cost. As they've become racier, they've become less forgiving on the rough stuff. Not long ago, plenty of riders would happily link two roads with a cheeky gravel section. Today's hyper-focused race bikes are far less suited to the road less travelled. And if you've ever hit a pothole on a skinny-tyred road bike, you'll know that stomach-dropping, white-knuckle moment all too well.

Gravel bikes fix that. Roll on a wider tyre, somewhere between 1.25 and 2 inches, and suddenly bumps, potholes, and dirt sections stop being terrifying. You give up a little speed, sure, but you gain a huge amount of stability and control, and you dramatically cut the risk of a broken wrist or collarbone on a bad road. For a lot of riders, that trade is a no-brainer.

Here's the thing though: gravel is more than a bike. It's become its own culture. When one well-known pro stepped away from WorldTour road racing and threw himself into gravel, he talked about being drawn to a whole new culture forming around it, and he was spot on.

The best part of gravel is how low the barrier to entry is. You don't need a fancy new bike to start. Throw a set of wider tyres on an older frame and you're away.

If you do go gravel-specific, you'll get a less aggressive geometry, more tyre clearance (often up to around 1.6 inches at the rear and 2 up front), and the option of flared bars and a higher front end for extra stability in the drops. Race-oriented gravel bikes chase speed and low weight, but there are loads of steel and aluminium options that make for a friendlier, more affordable way in. For many riders, those wider tyres simply feel more planted and in control, and that confidence is addictive.

Your existing road or MTB kit will absolutely do the job, in the same way a mountain bike can happily roll down tarmac.
